Dog Food Calculator: Calculate Daily Portion & Calories

Calculate how much food to feed your dog per day based on age, weight, activity level, and kibble caloric density using official NRC & WSAVA equations.

Unsure how many grams of kibble your dog needs each day? Overfeeding leads to obesity and joint stress, while underfeeding causes malnutrition and energy loss.

Enter your dog’s weight, life stage, and kibble caloric density below to calculate their ideal daily portion based on veterinary energy standards.

* Average kibble is ~350-400 kcal/100g, check your dog food bag.

💡 Feeding Disclaimer
This calculator follows standard NRC/WSAVA equations. Metabolic rates vary based on breed, climate, activity, and individual health. Use this output as a starting benchmark and adjust portions by 5-10% based on body condition score (BCS) over time.

🐶 The Science Behind the Formulas

1. RER (Resting Energy Requirement)

RER is the energy required by a healthy, resting dog in a thermo-neutral environment to sustain basic life functions.

  • Standard Formula: RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75

2. DER (Daily Energy Requirement)

DER factors in your dog’s current lifestyle, growth status, and neuter status on top of RER.

  • Formula: DER = RER × Life Stage Multiplier

3. Finding Kibble Caloric Density (kcal/100g)

Check the back of your dog food bag for metabolizable energy (ME). If it reads 3700 kcal/kg, that equals 370 kcal/100g.
